Vermentino, o Rolle, como es conocido en el sur de Francia es una uva blanca del Mediterráneo. Ha habido diferentes hipótesis sobre el origen de la vermentino. Muchos sostienen que su origen es español, a la Vermentino se le asocia más con Liguria (donde se le conoce como Pigato) y con Riviera Ligure di Ponente, de hecho, el análisis de ADN confirmó que era idéntica a la pigato de Liguria y a la favorita de Piamonte. No está claro si la vermentino es también idéntica a la variedad rollo, que se encuentra al este de la Provenza, en los alrededores de Niza, ya que "rolle" es un sinónimo de la vermentino. Esta variedad se ha cultivado en la provincia de Sassari (región de Gallura, al norte de Cerdeña) desde el siglo XIV.
Se encuentra principalmente en el sur de Europa, especialmente el sur de Francia, el norte de Italia, y las islas de Córcega y Cerdeña. También está presente en España, Estados Unidos y Australia. Es cultivada ampliamente en las regiones italianas de Cerdeña, Liguria (donde se la conoce como pigato) y el Piamonte (con el nombre favorita) y también es cultivada en la Toscana. Hay pequeños cultivos de esta variedad en las provincias españolas de Huelva, Granada y Almería. En Estados Unidos hay cultivos en California, Virginia y Carolina del Norte. En Australia está presente en junto al río Margaret, en Australia Occidental.
Con la Vermentino se elaboran normalmente vinos ligeros y aromáticos con acidez y notas de limón con tintes refrescantes. Por el contrario, los vinos Vermentino de Bolgheri en el norte de la Toscana son más respetados por su profundidad y complejidad, y se pueden comparar con Viognier por sus características florales. Pocos vinos elaborados con Vermentino tienen la estructura suficiente para envejecer, por lo que es mejor consumirlos jóvenes. Se utiliza en coupages y en vinos varietales de DOC conocidos como Colli di Luni y Cinque Terre. Sus vinos se caracterizan en vista por tener un color amarillo pálido con reflejos verdosos, limpios y brillantes, en nariz se suelen encontrar notas frutales, flores blancas, cítricas y minerales, mientras que en la boca deja una sensación refrescante.
