Según el ministerio de agricultura de Italia, el paisaje de Lazio se compone de 55 por ciento de colinas y 20 por ciento de llanuras. El cuarto restante está clasificado como montañoso, y se encuentra casi por completo en los bordes norte y este de la región, donde Lazio se encuentra con Abruzos, en la sección más alta y accidentada de los Apeninos. La proximidad con el mar Tirreno es muy importante ya que la brisa fresca del mar baja las temperaturas más cálidas y secas de la costa, mientras que la zona montañosa está sujeta a varios climas a pesar de estar protegida por los Apeninos de los vientos fríos del noroeste.

Además de la IGT Lazio, en la región podemos encontrar otras IGT menos implantadas que ésta, pero que también tienen su importancia, como son Anagni IGT , que cubre la provincia de Frosinone, Civitella d'Agliano IGT , que es exclusivo de la parroquia Civitella d'Agliano, al noreste de Montefiascone, Colli Cimini IGT , para las colinas alrededor de Viterbo, Costa Etrusco Romana IGT, que cubre un tramo de la costa norte del Lacio y Frusinate IGT , que cubre la provincia de Frosinone. También hay 30 DOC en Lazio, muchas de las cuales tienen una producción anual muy baja, a menudo porque los productores en sus zonas prefieren la flexibilidad de la configuración de Lazio IGT.
Los vinos.
Entre los vinos IGT Lazio, el que más se produce es el tinto merlot, pero se elaboran vinos espumosos monovarietales de roscetto y tinitos dulces de aleatico. Lazio es el hogar de cerca de 30 denominaciones DOC, que representan una excelente variedad de vinos en la que destacan tres DOC blancos, el vino Castelli Romani que es el más importante, el vino Frascati, sin duda el más famoso y tradicional y por último el vino Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone. Un estravagante hallazgo es el vino Aleatico di Gradoli, un tinto dulce que también se puede transformar en un licoroso. Cesanese es el hogar del hasta hace poco el único vino DOCG de Lazio, elaborado bajo el título vino Cesanese del Piglio. Ahora en Lazio encontramos dos más el vino Cannellino di Frascati y el vino Frascati Superiore.
