Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez surgen como iniciativa de Raúl Pérez, que empezó elaborando los vinos de la empresa familiar, Castro Ventosa, hasta que se independizó y creó Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez en Ponferrada. Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez se hicieron famosas de la noche a la mañana cuando 'The Wine Advocate', la revista de Robert Parker, dio 98 puntos sobre 100 a uno de sus vinos, el Ultreia de Valtuille 2005. Raúl, que ha vuelto a colaborar en Castro Ventosa, también ha destacado con sus iniciativas en otras zonas como en la Ribeira Sacra, Rías Baixas, Cebreros, Vinos de León. Es uno de los elaboradores más finos de España, y un estudioso de viñas y cepas.
Historia de un número uno.
Raúl Pérez es uno de los enólogos españoles más reconocido dentro y fuera de nuestras fronteras. Nació en 1973 en Valtuille de Abajo y procede de una familia berciana de viticultores de toda la vida. Se unió a la bodega familiar Castro Ventosa con 19 años y pertenece a la generación de enólogos que ha revolucionado la comarca del Bierzo. Ayudó en la primera elaboración de Álvaro Palacios en la zona y también a la familia Peique en sus primeras añadas, por lo que el espíritu de colaboración siempre ha estado presente en su relación con las bodegas del Bierzo. Raúl tiene una forma muy particular de entender el vino. La prioridad no es la bodega, sino la viña. Por ello trabaja en multitud de proyectos, propios y en colaboración, tomando únicamente como punto de partida los viñedos en los que encuentran las uvas que más le gustan. En El Bierzo es también director técnico de Bodegas Estefanía y su marca Tilenus, y recientemente ha vuelto a la bodega familiar Castro Ventosa. Pero sus colaboraciones y asesorías son numerosas e incluyen zonas como Rías Baixas (con su vino Sketch) Ribeira Sacra (con su vino El Pecado), Monterrei, Madrid; además de haber trabajado en países como Portugal y Sudáfrica. En el año 2003 inició su proyecto personal en El Bierzo bajo el nombre de Ultreia, una forma antigua con la que los peregrinos del Camino de Santiago se saludaban y que significa "vamos más allá". Este significado guarda curiosamente relación con la historia familiar y personal de Raúl Pérez.
