De norte a sur, y de este a oeste, Castilla-La Mancha es la gran región vitivinícola, por excelencia. Algunas de sus regiones han sido llamadas "la bodega de Europa", y la calidad de sus vinos es de reconocimiento universal, tanto para sus vinos elaborados con uvas de variedad autóctona, como con foráneas, que se han aclimatado de forma excepcional. Hoy, los vinos de la Tierra de Castilla compiten con ventaja frente a vinos procedentes de Chile o Australia, entre otros. Las variedades de uva blanca cultivadas son la Airén, Albillo Real, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Macabeo o Viura, Malvar, Malvasía Aromática, Marisancho o Pardillo, Merseguera, Moscatel de grano menudo, Moscatel de Alejandría, Parellada, Pedro Ximénez, Riesling, Sauvignon blanc, Torrontés, Verdejo, Verdoncho y Viognier. Entre las tintas, la Bobal, Cabernet-sauvignon, Cabernet-franc, Coloraillo, Forcallat tinta, Garnacha tinta, Garnacha tintorera, Graciano, Malbec, Mazuela, Mencia, Merlot, Monastrell, Moravia agria, Moravia dulce o Crujidera, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Prieto picudo, Rojal tinta, Syrah, Tempranillo o Cencibel, Tinto de la pámpana blanca y Tinto Velasco o Frasco. Castilla la Mancha se ha convertido en el viñedo más grande del mundo, y en la reserva de Europa: es la comunidad española que más vino exporta, según el Informe de Comercio Exterior de la Junta de Comunidades. La Indicación Geográfica Vinos de la Tierra nació para mejorar la comercialización de ciertos productos a medio camino entre los Vinos de Mesa y la prestigiosa Denominación de Origen (D.O.). La producción de estos vinos ha crecido notablemente durante los últimos años y cada vez son más bodegas, dentro y fuera de Castilla la Mancha, que prefieren esta figura de calidad, porque creen que tiene mayor impacto y se vende bien en el extranjero.
Zona de producción.
En la zona geográfica de los Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla, el viñedo se encuentra profundamente arraigado en la historia y en la cultura de sus habitantes. En 28 municipios de la zona geográfica, el viñedo ocupa más del 50% de su superficie. En 1999 las Cortes de Castilla-La Mancha aprobaron la Indicación Geográfica Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla para los vinos que se elaboran íntegramente con uvas producidas en la zona geográfica. El objetivo de la iniciativa es facilitar su identificación a los consumidores que demandan vinos diferentes a los de denominación de origen y a los de mesa. Esta nueva indicación ha tenido gran acogida entre el sector vinícola. Se ha producido un notable incremento en la producción de los Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla, pasando de los 5.000.000 de litros declarados, cuando se reconoce la Indicación Geográfica, a más de 126.000.000 litros. Las bodegas que elaboran Vino de la Tierra de Castilla son unas 200, y las industrias que comercializan vino de esta indicación geográfica son más de 300, que ponen este vino en el mercado con más de 600 marcas. Castilla-La Mancha cuenta con cinco provincias en cada una de las cuales, con diferentes climas y orografías, crecen las diferentes variedades de uva. Profundamente arraigado en la vida de sus habitantes, las zonas vinícolas han desarrollado una cultura del vino que se puede conocer en cada una de sus bodegas, y en las localidades en que se ubican. La amplia modernización adaptada desde el último tercio del siglo XX ha generado más de seiscientes marcas comercializadas bajo la D.O. Tierra de Castilla, con unas cualidades excepcionales en cada una de sus variantes.
