El producto originario del Valle de Uco es todo aquel vino o bebida espirituosa que cumple con su definición, es decir, con uvas cosechadas en el Valle de Uco, elaboradas y el vino embotellado en el mismo, por más que la uva sea de Tunuyán, se elabore en San Carlos y el vino se embotelle en Tupungato. Estos tres departamentos forman parte del Área de Producción del Valle de Uco. Este caso solo se da para la Indicación Geográfica, y la IG a utilizar en el producto es “Indicación Geográfica Valle de Uco”. El Valle de Uco es una región vitivinícola clave de Mendoza, Argentina. A una hora en coche al sur de la ciudad de Mendoza, es el hogar de algunos de los vinos más famosos de la región. La principal variedad de uva de Malbec de Argentina brilla aquí, produciendo vinos tintos de terroir con un aroma floral distintivo. El Cabernet Franc está mucho menos plantado, pero se han logrado algunos resultados excelentes. Además, algunos de los mejores vinos blancos de Mendoza elaborados con Chardonnay y Torrontés provienen de viñedos del Valle de Uco. El clima relativamente frío, permite que el período de maduración sea más lento de lo requerido. Aunque se considera parte de la región de Mendoza, el Valle de Uco puede reconocerse por derecho propio en varios aspectos: No solo el área vitícola es bastante distinta, la región también alberga a varios de los principales productores de Argentina. Atraídos por el excelente clima y el suelo, los recién llegados, como los nombres de Burdeos Lurton, Dassault, Rothschild y Rolland, han elevado el perfil de la región. Los viñedos de Vista Flores han producido algunos vinos particularmente exitosos.El Valle de Uco ha visto una inversión sin precedentes en los últimos 20 años. El enoturismo se está convirtiendo en una de las industrias clave de la región. El espectacular paisaje y las instalaciones de vinificación de última generación han llevado a algunos a considerar a la región como el equivalente de Argentina al Valle de Napa de California.
El clima y el suelo.
Entre los méritos específicos de Uco está su alta elevación al pie de las montañas de los Andes. Las subregiones La Consulta y Tunuyan del valle se encuentran a altitudes de 850 metros, 2000 pies y 1100 m, 3600 pies, respectivamente. Estos son ligeramente más altos sobre el nivel del mar que Maipu y Luján de Cuyo en el norte. Ubicados a una latitud de 33°S, los sitios de viñedos elevados del área se benefician de las altas temperaturas diurnas combinadas con noches más frescas. Esto permite que las uvas produzcan azúcares equilibrados y acidez mientras alcanzan la madurez fenólica. Desde la región de Tupungato en el norte hasta San Carlos en el sur, el Valle de Uco tiene aproximadamente 70 km de largo y 22 km de ancho. El valle sigue el curso norte del río Tunuyan a medida que fluye hacia abajo desde los picos andinos. El clima continental seco trae poca lluvia, por lo que el río es un recurso importante para el riego de viñedos. La ciudad de Tunuyan, con una población de alrededor de 45,000 habitantes, está situada en las orillas occidentales del río. Los suelos en todo el Valle de Uco son aluviales y bastante uniformes: una base de arcilla y roca con una superficie pedregosa y arenosa.
