Rosso di Montalcino se encuentra en la misma área definida que su hermano mayor, el Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. Ambos están situados en el corazón de la Toscana, en el centro de Italia. Este DOC fue creado en 1984 con el fin de aprovechar al máximo la fruta de las vides más jóvenes de las nuevas plantaciones. La idea era crear un estilo de vino más fresco que necesitara un tiempo de envejecimiento considerablemente menor que su hermano: Un año, con solo seis meses en roble. Esto permitiría a los productores de Brunello ganar dinero mientras esperan que su vino DOCG envejeciera, así como, desclasificar cualquier Brunello que hubiera envejecido durante dos o tres años pero que no hubiese alcanzado los estándares requeridos. Hoy este vino es venerado por su gran distinción, profundidad de cereza negra y frutos de bayas silvestres, y el uso cuidadoso del roble revelado en un toque de especias y vainilla. Al igual que su hermano Montalcino, es un vino de cuerpo completo elaborado con puro Sangiovese (en este caso, la forma local "Grosso"). Sin embargo, se considera un estilo de vino más vivaz, que combina frescura con estructura, y puede abordarse a una edad mucho más temprana. El área de producción del vino Rosso di Montalcino DOC corresponde al área del municipio de Montalcino en la provincia de Siena y se encuentra en el sureste de la Toscana, a 40 kilómetros al sur de la ciudad de Siena. En los años 60 del siglo XX se decidió enmarcar este vino dentro de una denominación de origen y la primera idea fue designar este vino como " Rosso de los viñedos de Brunello ". La producción de un vino tinto joven, además de la de Brunello, ha estado presente durante mucho tiempo en el territorio de Montalcino. En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX se produjo un vino definido como "Rosso". Como parte de la Exposición de vinos típicos de Siena celebrada en Siena en 1932, 1933 y 1935, se presentaron vinos "Rosso" de Montalcino. En los años alrededor de 1960 se pensó enmarcar este vino dentro de un DOC y la primera idea fue designar este vino como "Rosso de los viñedos de Brunello". Posteriormente el vino fue designado como "Rosso di Montalcino". Rosso di Montalcino es apreciado por su fragancia y frescura, dado por los aromas primarios.

El vino DOC "Rosso di Montalcino" debe obtenerse de uvas de viñedos compuestos exclusivamente por la variedad de uva "Sangiovese", llamada Montalcino "Brunello". Los vinos de denominación de origen controlada "Rosso di Montalcino", cuando se liberan para el consumo, deben cumplir las siguientes características: El grado alcohólico volumétrico total mínimo en volumen: 12,00% vol; la acidez total mínima será de 5g/l; el extracto mínimo no reductor: 22,0 g/l. El vino DOC "Rosso di Montalcino" no se puede liberar para el consumo antes del 1 de septiembre del año siguiente al de su producción. Los vinos de esta denominación, cuando se liberan para el consumo, deben cumplir las siguientes características: Tener un color rojo rubí intenso; su olor debe de ser característico e intenso y su sabor, seco, cálido, ligeramente tánico.
