Cuando el piojo de la raíz de la vid filoxera llegó a Madeira a fines del siglo XIX y mató a las vides, los isleños replantaron con vides híbridas estadounidenses, que eran resistentes a la plaga. Desde entonces, se han plantado variedades europeas nuevas y mejores, pero quedan muchas vides americanas. Los lugareños todavía beben vinos de mesa con un aroma curioso, hechos de uvas híbridas estadounidenses (están prohibidos para los vinos DOP e IGP). Los primeros exportadores de vinos de Madeira se dieron cuenta de que sus productos delicados viajaban mejor cuando estaban fortificados con un poco de brandy. También descubrieron que algo milagroso sucedió durante largos viajes por el mar a través del ecuador: el sabor se volvió intenso y a nuez. Los productores de Madeira aprendieron a imitar este fenómeno envejeciendo barriles de vino fortificado al sol, bajo techos de vidrio en sus almacenes, durante años, un proceso que llamaron canteiro. Los viñedos de Madeira están fragmentados en pequeñas parcelas a lo largo de terrazas excavadas en las laderas volcánicas. La mayoría de las vides están entrenadas en pérgolas. Las uvas se cosechan entre mediados de agosto y mediados de octubre, los pequeños productores entregan a veces pequeñas cantidades de uvas.
